I finished writing the November collection of holiday stories (again, just the first drafts) on July 9 — I started on April 15, so it took me just under three months to finish this collection. It’s a long one, though — 63,800 words. That’s longer than some of my novels. That also means I only have 31 stories to go before I finish the project. I didn’t finish it on time — on time would’ve been toward the end of 2023 — but I am going to get it done. I’ve written 334 stories already; stopping now would just be silly.
Publishing Holiday Heat is going pretty well overall; the July edition just came out a few days ago, and I’m about to start editing August. I also am rather glad to be in the final month of the series, because now I can start wrapping up storylines. There are 113 characters in the character bible, and 52 columns in my “plot notes” tab — some are combos, like Cal and Amelia; others are separate, like Mason, Cee, and Jessica. I also have a couple of columns that won’t be repeated, such as “Alien Abduction Guy” from the March edition and “Jennifer/Douglas/Drummer”, which is a stand-alone story in November. I definitely am going to wrap up M/C/J, Charlie and Jeannette, Shawn and Julie, and a few others, but part of the problem is that I may not want to write about everyone so some storylines, by their very nature, are going to feel incomplete to some people. That’s what happens when you write a bunch of interconnected stories; some characters don’t get as much attention — like Brandon and Ashley, whose relationship is pretty settled the way it is and there isn’t much more to say. I guess it just depends.
