I was recently negotiating a scene with a friend and she said she wanted to include things that are ancillary to spanking — specifically, mouth-soaping and corner time. I also offered temperature-taking as something I could do, but she declined. Fine by me.

But I do like including temperature-taking in certain types of scenes. I’ve written about one that I did earlier this year, and I fictionalized it for one of the May holiday stories. I did my first temperature-taking scene back in 2013 or so, and since then I’ve done… oh, let’s say half a dozen of them. After all, not everyone is interested in them. A lot of my play partners are just that: play partners. We don’t have disciplinary dynamics or anything like that. Temperature-taking really works better when there’s some sort of power exchange dynamic, even if it’s just ad-hoc.

What do I like about temperature-taking scenes?

• Power exchange — the person being tested often feels extremely submissive. If they’re a little, it can really get into their head as well.
• Mild humiliation — I’m not really into humiliation and degradation, but having someone prep your anus with Vaseline and then insert a thermometer and hold it there while you’re over their lap can cause even the staunchest bottom to flush with embarrassment.
• Discomfort — I’m a little bit of a sadist, and having something in your bottom can be uncomfortable. Especially since I tend to use a larger thermometer than the standard rectal variety. Plus, the squirminess of the Vaseline afterward can add to it too. After all, I don’t let the bottom clean up until after their spanking.
• Role-play — while role-play isn’t a huge thing for me, I can do it, and I’m pretty good at it. The “college student pretending to be sick to skip class” role-play works really well with temperature-taking, because the bottom can get punished for a variety of things, including lying and wasting money (tuition is expensive).
• Insertion — for people who consent to it, I like inserting things in their butts. Toys, my fingers (or other body parts), and yes, even thermometers.

I realize this type of play isn’t for everyone, but for those who are into it, or who are into the feelings they get from being treated that way, it can be a very powerful tool in one’s arsenal.
