Am I edging myself?

For the past couple of weeks, on and off, I’ve been reading King Sorrow by Joe Hill. It’s a pretty good book, and it’s also a very long book. At the time of this writing, I have (according to my reading app) about half an hour left. The story is building toward the final confrontation with the main villain.

And I find myself not wanting to read it.

Am I edging myself? Am I looking at my reading app, deciding not to read the book, and doomscrolling instead? Why would I do this to myself.

King Sorrow is a horror novel. It’s entirely possible that the villain wins and the good guys all die (or worse). I feel like that’s not likely to happen, but it certainly could. However, I don’t have a problem with books ending that way so long as the ending is satisfying. I feel like this book will end in a satisfying manner. There’s enough time to wrap it up and give me an ending I can appreciate.

I just don’t understand why I won’t read the last half-hour.

I’m not going to abandon the book; I’ve spent too long with it, and have too little left, to do that to myself. I simply don’t know when I’m going to actually finish it.

Am I the only person that does this with books? Good ones or bad ones? I can’t be alone in this.
