Don’t Stop

I started writing a new story a few days ago, and I got 2500 words into it before I had to stop and do something work-related. Then I did more work, and had lunch, and had a meeting, and by the time I had time to get back to the story, I didn’t feel like writing any more on it.

I’m not sure why this is the case. I’m interested in what’s going to happen in the story, I know what plot points are coming, and I’m always happier when I get some writing done. I even stopped mid-scene so I could pick up where I left off (I find it easier to do that when I’m mid-scene, instead of at the end of a scene).

I’m not feeling particularly sad or depressed. I’m a little stressed over money stuff — I’m going to need to spend a lot on my house in the coming year or two — but I generally feel pretty okay about things. I should be able to jump back in and write some more on the story.

This is why I suggest to writers this simple two-word piece of advice: “don’t stop”. When you start writing, don’t stop, because if you stop, you’re likely to lose your mojo, and if you’re anything like me, that mojo is very hard to recapture.

After writing this blog post (I wrote it last week) I’m going to try and get some more done on the story. We’ll see how it goes.
