Today is Bastille Day, a French holiday commemorating the storming of the Bastille, a major moment in the French Revolution. It’s also a great song by Rush. You should listen to it.
I try not to be too political on here but it’s hard not to see what’s happening in America and… well… we’ll be lucky if we even have elections in 2026 or 2028. If what’s happening here was happening in any other country in the world, the US (under any president, Republican or Democrat, except for the current one) would want to send in troops and aid to rescue the people.
I’m reminded of the novel Soft Apocalypse by Will McIntosh, in which society slowly crumbles. I have to imagine that even McIntosh couldn’t foresee a future where society is crumbling around us but we still have to go to work in an office every day for the glory of our oligarchical overlords. If I could live another 100 years, I’d love to see what kind of historical fiction is written about this period in US history. Hopefully we’ll be allowed to do that. Hopefully it won’t just be AI-generated slop. Hopefully things will change.
I doubt it, though.
